Help vulnerable horses leaving the racing industry

The lack of any meaningful strategic aftercare policy for unwanted race horses is a disgrace that the racing industry needs to urgently address. Currently, only about  £130 per horse is allocated by the Horse Race Betting Levy Board for aftercare provision of the 7,500 horses (approx.) who leave racing each year.

Increased finances to develop a programme of targeted aftercare would greatly improve the short- and long-term outcomes for horses as an interim step until the horse-racing industry ceases to exist.

Please would you write to your MP and ask them to support George Eustice MP’s request to Stuart Andrew, Under Secretary of State at the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), to allocate an annual grant of £12 million (through the Horserace Betting Levy Board) to fund aftercare for retired race horses.

Please fill out the form below to send a pre-written letter to your local MP, asking for support for vulnerable horses leaving the racing industry. You will have the opportunity to personalise the message on the next page, which we recommend, as this will often have greater impact.
